Hi, my name is Aaron Edlund and I am excited to share Assist Coaching with you. I think kids should play sports because it will teach them how to win honorably, lose gracefully, respect authority, work with others, manage time, stay out of trouble, and...maybe even to throw or catch. There are thousands of coaches who know way more about basketball and volleyball than I do, but the things I do know, I would like to share with kids!
My playing resume includes playing basketball at North Scott High School (Iowa), Medicine Hat College (Alberta) and the University of Lethbridge (Alberta). Along the way I picked up some great tips from some amazing coaches. These coaches helped mold me as a coach. Since 2001 I have coached athletes from 5 years old to 19 years old in programs like Small Ball, Jr. Pronghorns, and Basketball Alberta's Regional Training Centre. What I have learned along the way is that coaches feel pressured to teach "plays" that will help their teams win. There is a huge need for skill development! Assist Coaching programs focus on individual skill development and will follow Canada's Long Term Athlete Development Model.
